About us Organization
The story of "La Perle Retrouvée" is that of a Haitian community that overcame many challenges to create a space for solidarity and mutual aid. The organization was founded in 1998 and has gradually grown to become a pillar of Montreal's Haitian community...
Throughout its history, "La Perle Retrouvée" has shown unwavering determination to help socio-economically disadvantaged families, the elderly and young people in and around the Saint-Michel district.
In 2003, "La Perle Retrouvée" acquired the Saint-Damase property, a defining moment in its development. This acquisition enabled the organization to set up a multitude of activities and services to meet the needs of the community. Among these activities, the weekly distribution of foodstuffs in partnership with Moisson Montréal has had a significant impact on the region's precarious families.
One of the most important aspects of La Perle Retrouvée's history is its commitment to the elderly. In 2009, the Centre de Jour was created to offer seniors activities designed to keep them active and informed of their rights in terms of mental health and social services. The center has also collaborated with the Montreal Police Department to raise seniors' awareness of prevention.
But "La Perle Retrouvée" does not limit itself to socio-cultural activities. The organization has also been involved in humanitarian actions, particularly after natural disasters in Haiti. Following Hurricane Jeanne in 2004, the center became a focal point for humanitarian aid to victims in Gonaïves, the worst-hit region.
In 2010, when the earthquake struck Haiti, "La Perle Retrouvée" mobilized its resources to support Canadian families affected by the tragedy. The center became a focal point for the CSSS's psychosocial support resources, and welcomed political figures, community organizations and volunteers to provide essential assistance.
The organization is also committed to promoting Haitian culture. The creation of the "Haïti Chante et Danse" troupe in 2007 has made it possible to discover the richness of Haitian folklore and encourage the Haitian community to participate in intercultural exchanges. Folk dance and music classes were offered to young and old alike, contributing to the preservation of Haitian culture.
Over the years, "Haïti Chante et Danse" has taken part in numerous activities to promote interculturalism and encourage intergenerational exchanges, including festivals, parades and community events. These actions have strengthened bonds of solidarity and demystified certain taboos.
However, "La Perle Retrouvée" faces many challenges. The organization operates without recurring subsidies and relies on fundraising campaigns, donations and the volunteer work of its members. Despite these obstacles, the organization's commitment to the community and its desire to help socio-economically disadvantaged families, the elderly and young people in the Saint-Michel district and surrounding area remain unwavering.
The organization looks to the future with confidence and hope, aware that its role in the community is essential. Today, "La Perle Retrouvée" continues to work to build a better future, relying on the strength of solidarity and collective commitment.
